Tamil films are renowned for their unique storyline and amazing twists. No wonder, these films are often remade into other languages. Bollywood is no different. The past few years have seen a surge of movies which were remade from Tamil.

Take a look at some of the Hindi films that have been inspired and sometimes totally copied from Tamil.

Alaipayuthey – Saathiya

Alaipayuthey – Saathiya

Directed by Mani Ratnam and starring R. Madhavan and Shalini in the lead roles, this film is considered to be one of the best romantic films of Tamil cinema. Portraying the love of two youngsters and the struggles they face after they elope and get married, the movie was runaway hit in Tamil. The film was remade into Hindi by Shaad Ali and starred Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee. The film with music by AR Rahman was highly appreciated by the Hindi audience too.

Thevar Magan – Viraasat

Thevar Magan – Viraasat

Boasting of superb performances by Kamal Haasan, Sivaji Ganesan, Revathi and Gauthami, the film is about a man who comes back to his village after a prolonged stay in America and gets embroiled in the village politics. He goes on to be the village head after the death of his father. The film was remade in Hindi by Priyadarshan and had Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Tabu and Pooja Batra in the lead roles. Anil Kapoor’s performance in Hindi was at par with that of Kamal Haasan and was highly applauded by all.

A action thriller directed by Gowtham Menon, this movie had Suriya, Jyothika and Jeevan playing the lead roles. The story of the film revolves around a police officer who is embroiled in several cases related to renowned gangsters which effects his personal life too and leads to the murder of his wife. The officer then goes on to seek his revenge and bring the criminals to law. The film with its fabulous performance by Suriya and amazing music by Harris Jayaraj went on to be a hit. Nishikant Kamat remade this film in Hindi and named it Force. Boasting of an exact storyline the film had John Abraham, Genelia D’souza, Raj Babbar and Vidyut Jaamwal in the lead roles. However, the film did not make a mark with the Hindi audience.

Sethu – Tere Naam

This Tamil film, directed by Bala which took Chiyaan Vikram to new heights is the story of a goon who falls in love with a woman and tries to woo her. However he fails and ends up in a sanitarium. This was inspired from the true story of a friend of director Bala and Vikram’s portrayal of a crazy lover was much applauded. Later, Satish Kaushik remade the film in Hindi as Tere Naam with Salman Khan and Bhoomika Chawla in the lead. Salman too played the role with complete conviction and the film went on to be a hit in Bollywood.

Ayutha Ezuthu – Yuva

Ayutha Ezuthu – Yuva

A Mani Ratnam movie starring Suriya, Madhavan, Siddharth, Esha Deol, Meera Jasmine and Trisha, the story of this film portrays the life of three different men who belong to different strata of the society and the way their lives intermingle at a certain point. Mani Ratnam remade the Hindi version too simultaneously with Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Esha Deol, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. Both the films were critically acclaimed and had foot tapping music from AR Rahman.
