Difference Between Good Cholesterol and Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all the cells in your body. Your body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Cholesterol is also found in foods from animal sources, such as egg yolks, meat, and cheese, but did you guys know that there are actually two types of cholesterols, there’s good cholesterol and then there is bad cholesterol. They are called LDL (low-density lipoprotein), known as “bad” cholesterol and HDL (high-density lipoprotein), or “good” cholesterol.

This type of cholesterol makes up most of your body’s cholesterol. High levels of this cholesterol can be dangerous and it might increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. This is because if you have too much bad cholesterol in your blood, it can combine with other substances in the blood to form plaque. Plaque sticks to the walls of your arteries. This buildup of plaque is known as atherosclerosis. It can lead to major problems and diseases like heart health issues and other heart-related issues. Your Ldl should be below 190, if it is more than 190, then you need to make some serious changes in your diet.

This type of cholesterol is also known as good cholesterol, this is good for you and if you have higher levels of this cholesterol, it means that it will lower the risk of heart diseases and in fact, it will protect from all these heart-related diseases. HDL absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver. The liver then flushes it from the body.  The desirable levels of HDL cholesterol are 60 mg or more if the cholesterol level is less than 40 mg, then you should look to try and increase the HDL levels. You can increase your HDL levels by making changes in your lifestyle such as physical exercise, quitting smoking or improving your diet, all these have shown an increase in HDL levels and have lower the risk of heart attacks.
