He is a multifaceted personality and a versatile actor who has offered the Tamil film industry a number of impressive and state of the art movies. Known for his jest for perfection, he has won a number of awards at the State and National Level. That’s not all, Kamal Haasan has his presence etched even with Oscars.

However, the much coveted Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars still evades him. That too, in spite of his movies having made to the nomination list many times. But, there is no denying the fact that he is definitely an Ulaganayagan, what with his movies have represented India at the global level.

Directed by Bharathan, this film was a treat to watch as Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and Nadikar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan were teamed together. The film is based on a family feud which affects a whole village and Kamal Haasan plays the role of the village headman’s son who later succeeds him. The film was highly appreciated for powerful performances and won 5 National Awards. It was nominated in the 65th Oscar Awards.

Directed by Shankar, this film was one of the most expensive films of the times. It cast Kamal Haasan in a double role – as father and son. He underwent a complete transformation for the role of the father by donning the makeup of an old man and even displaying the required antics. The film was highly appreciated and won 3 National Awards. It also got an Oscar nomination in the year 1996.

Kuruthipunal

A hardcore action thriller, this film was a trendsetter of sorts when it was released in 1995. Starring Kamal Haasan, Arjun, Nassar and Gouthami in the lead, this movie was about two police officers who try to uncover the influences of underworld in various terrorist activities. It was acclaimed by the critics and applauded by the audience. It got nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film in the 68th Academy Awards.

Nayagan

A cult movie that was directed by ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan played the role of an underworld don with complete perfection. The metamorphosis of the character from a young goon to an old man was quite impressive and the performance displayed by the actor was unforgettable. It to the 2005 Times list of 100 All Time Best Films of the World.  It was officially submitted in the Best Foreign Film category for the 60th Academy Award. However, it did not get a nomination.

Hey Ram

Boasting of an ensemble star cast, this film was directed by Kamal Haasan himself with India Pakistan partition and Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination forming the backdrop of the film. Though the film did not succeed in India, it won critical acclaim, which is why it was submitted for Oscar nominations in 2000. But, the film was not nominated.

Other than these Tamil films, Kamal Haasan’s Hindi film Saagar and Telugu film Swati Mutyam were also official submissions to the Oscars which did not manage to gain nominations. Ulaganayagn is still going strong and dishing out great movies. Here’s hoping that he soon wins the coveted Oscar and makes India proud.
