Six Malayalam Movies that were Remade into Multiple Languages

The Malayalam film industry with its impressive breed of great directors and writers has dished out a number of path breaking films over the years. Some of these films had such a vivid and interesting story line that film directors of other languages remade them.

Over the years, a number of Malayalam films have been remade into Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Here is a list of some of these movies.

Manichitratazhu

Manichitratazhu

A psychological thriller with Superstar Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobhana in the lead and directed by Fazil, this film was super hit in Mollywood. The story of the film was way different from all the conventional stories, which is why it was remade into all the major South Indian languages as well as in Bollywood. It was remade into Bhool Bhulaiya in Hindi, Chandramukhi in Tamil, Nagavalli in Telugu and Apthamitra in Kannada. However, there is no denying the fact that none of the remakes were as impressive as the original which still remains to be a hot favorite of Malyalam movie fans.

Kireedam

This Sibi Malayil movie about an aspiring police officer who is forcefully converted into a ruffian boasted of stellar performances from Mohanlal and Thilakan. The film was a runaway hit and was remade into Gardish in Hindi, Kireedam in Tamil and Modada Mareyalli in Kannada. All the remade versions were as successful as the original film.

Bodyguard

Bodyguard

Starring Dileep, Nayanthara and Thiagarajan in the lead and directed by Siddique this film was a perfect amalgamation of great performances, interesting story, rib tickling comedy and beautiful music. No wonder, it was remade into Kaavalan in Tamil and Bodyguard in Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. All the films were huge successes with the Hindi version having broken all box office collection records in the year 2011. The Bengali version of the film is underway and would soon hit the theatres.

Katha Parayumbol

Katha Parayumbol

With Sreenivasan, Mammootty and Meena in the lead, this film is about friendship between a poor barber and his childhood friend who grows up to be a renowned film star. Thanks to the great storyline peppered with right dash of comedy and emotions, this film was highly appreciated by the audience. It was remade as Billu in Hindi and Kuselan in Tamil. However, in spite of having stars like Shahrukh Khan and Rajnikanth, the remakes did not do as well as the original film.

Dhrishyam

Drishyam

Jeethu Joseph’s direction when coupled with the laid back performance of Mohanlal, made this murder mystery an instant hit. The suspense of the film kept the audience glued to the screens. The film was remade into Hindi as Drishyam, Tamil as Papanasam, Telugu as Drushyam and Kannada as Drishya. All the remade versions too managed to clinch the attention of the audience.

Traffic

Traffic

A multi starrer film which inter weaves the lives of different characters and has a green corridor as the backdrop, this film was quite appreciated by the Malayalam film fans. It was remade into Chennaiyil Oru Naal in Tamil, Traffic in Hindi and Crazy Star in Kannada.

There are many other Malayalam films that have been remade into other languages. However, these are definitely the best of the lot.
