10 Interesting Facts About Indian National Flag You Should Not Miss

The National Flag of India is the pride of all the citizens of the country and it represents our hopes and aspirations. The late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru called it “a flag not only of freedom for ourselves but a symbol of freedom to all people.”

Here are some interesting facts about the Indian national flag, that everyone should know about

1. The first Indian flag had religious symbols and eight roses on it with Vande Matram written in the middle. It was hoisted on August 7, 1906 at Parsi Bagan Square in Kolkata.

2. The second Indian flag with partial modifications was hoisted in 1907 by Madam Bhikaji Cama during the second Socialist International summit in Stuttgart, Germany.

3. Bal Gangadhar Tilak used a different type of flag in 1917. The flag had the Union Jack on the top left and Crescent on the top right corner. It also contained 7 Stars in the form of the Sapt-rishi constellation.

4. In 1921, a new flag which contained colours according to religions came into existence with the vision of Mahatma Gandhi. In the center there was a chakra.

5. To avoid the religious inference a new flag came to existence with partial modification of the previous flag. It had three colours, saffron, white and green with a chakra in the middle. This flag was officially adopted in the meeting of the Congress committee in 1931.

6. Indian National Flag in its present form was designed by Pingali Venkayya who was a freedom fighter from Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. His design was adopted as the Indian National flag on July 22, 1947.

7. Saffron colour is the symbol of courage and sacrifice; white is the symbol of truth, peace and purity and green is the symbol of prosperity. The Ashoka Chakra in the middle symbolises righteousness.

8. The National Flag of India, is made of khadi, a special type of hand-spun cloth of cotton or silk. The original cloth flag can be made by only one place called the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha or KKGSS. They are the only licensed manufacturer and supplier of the Indian National Flag.

9. Before 2002, normal citizens of India were not allowed to hoist the National Flag except on Independence Day and Republic Day. In 2002, Supreme Court of India amended the flag code and gave rights to all citizens to hoist the flag any time as per the flag code.

10. The Indian flag must never be put on the ground and must never be placed upside down When a foreign dignitary travels in a car provided by the government, the flag should be flown on the right side of the car while the flag of the foreign country should be flown on the left side.
