A major benefit of canned food is that, it can be stored for a very long time. Normally canned foods have 3-5 years expiry date from the time it has been shelved. But, you can use them for a year post the expiry date if you keep it closed, intact and store in a cold place.
Have you ever seen an expiry sticker on a box of eggs? Eggs are staple foods that usually do not have expiry date. So, you can store them for a longer time. But if you have your doubts and want to check if it is safe to eat an egg after storing it for a long time, then place the egg in a bowl of water, if it sinks, then it is safe to eat. But, if it floats on the water, then it is safe to throw it away.
The life of bread is quite less, but it can also be eaten for a certain time after its expiry date. As long as you don’t see moulds or any green fungi growing on it, your bread is safe to eat. And, if you wish to increase its longevity, then you can always store it in a refrigerator.

If it is in an unopened state, then Peanut Butter can be stored for more than a year after its expiry date in a freezer or pantry. But if it is in an open state, then it can last upto 2-3 months in pantry and 4-6 months in a freezer after its expiry date. But if you see your smooth butter changing colour and turning hard, it is safe to throw it away.
Your favourite tomato ketchup or mustard sauce can also be stored after their expiry date. They can be stored for about 1-2 years post their best before date if unopened. And, once opened they can be stored for 6-8 months in a freezer.
