With the technology based industry’s continuing growth, the government decided to upgrade twenty National Institutes of Technology to full-fledged technical universities. Parliament passed enabling legislation, the National Institutes of Technology Act in 2007 that took effect on 15 August of that year with the target to fulfill the need for quality manpower in the field of engineering, science, and technology and to provide consistent governance, fee structure, and rules across the NITs. The law designates each NIT an Institute of National Importance (INI). Here are the top 5 of the 31 NITs in India.
National Institute of Technology, Trichy (Tiruchirappalli)
Established in the year 1964 and converted to NIT in 2003, the National Institute of Technology, Trichy tops the list of NIT campuses with a national ranking of 1 in the year 2015 out of the 31 NITs.

MODE OF ADMISSION
One needs to qualify JEE (MAIN) where weight age to this Examination is 60% and to XII Board Examination Result is 40%. Admissions are on the basis of rank in JEE (Main).
Average packages offered in the campus are around Rs. 6 Lac per Annum. The highest package offered has been around $125,000 per Annum.
Regional Engineering College (REC) or NIT, Warangal
Established in the year 1959, as Regional Engineering College (RECW), Warangal. It was converted to NIT in the year 2002, shares the top spot with NIT Trichy.
In the year 2015, out of 31 NITs, it was ranked 2nd. The placement statistics for RECW look quite promising. With top Annual Salary of Rs 24 lakh offered by CodeNation, 18 lakh offered by Amazon and 15 lakh plus benefits offered by Flipkart, RECW surely is one of the best NITs in the country.
Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal (MANIT/MACT)
Formerly Maulana Azad College of Technology (MACT), is also known as National Institute of Technology, Bhopal (NIT Bhopal. It is an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act. Situated in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, MANIT was started in 1960 was named after the first Minister of Education, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
MACT started functioning in 1960 at Govt S.V. Polytechnic with an intake of 120 students and seven faculty members. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges. The institute is situated in the heart of Bhopal (Mata Mandir) on a beautiful plateau with a verdant 650-acre campus. It has 9 hostels with excellent food and lodging facilities.
MANIT hosts major national-level festivals and meets. All this coupled with annual packages ranging from 6.5 lac to a whooping 24 lac per annum. MANIT is one of the right places to be.
Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur (MNIT)
Formerly known as Malaviya Regional Engineering College Jaipur or MREC assumed its present name MNIT in 2002 and was recognized as an Institute of National Importance in 2007. It was founded in 1963 with two engineering branches and now comprises fourteen departments, a school of management and allied centers.
Being one of the top ranked colleges in the country and in Rajasthan it hosts conferences, exhibitions and conducts workshops consistently. Departments of the institute are involved in various research projects funded by major government agencies which include Ministry of Comm. & IT, Govt. of INDIA (Mo CIT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST)
Companies like Texas Instruments, Free scale, Saint Gobain, L&T Construction, Zigsaw Consultancy often visit the campus for recruiting interns.
Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad (MNNIT or NIT Allahabad)
Formerly Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), is a public higher education institute located in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. It is classified as an Institute of National Importance.
In a survey carried out by ET Now-Economic Times jointly, MNNIT Allahabad was declared as the best engineering institution of North India and ranked No.1 in overall ranking. It is also ranked 3rd in all 30 NIT’s and stands 1st in North India.
In 2014, the Global Human Research Development Center ranked NIT Allahabad as number one among technical institutes under the category of ‘Top Engineering Colleges of Super Excellence.
The college has the distinction of being first in the country to start an undergraduate program in Computer Science & Engineering in 1976-77.
It is among the few technical institutions in India to house two supercomputers, PARAM 8000 and PARAM 10000.
