Delhi or more correctly “Dilli” offers locals and visitors many delicacies. Street food is the heartbeat of “Dilwalo ki Dilli”. So without further ado, let me bring to you, the top 7 of Dilli’s mouth watering, mind boggling street foods.

Parantha:

Parantha DelhiI know, I know, this is so obvious. But well, Parantha has earned its place don’t you think? That muddy round gorgeous little thing with butter skiing on top of it? That satisfaction that it renders to your tummy, that deep little nap that accompanies it. Yum! Yum! (Its totally fine with me if you’re drooling right now)

Where to eat:

Paranthe Wali Gali is the number one spot. Moolchand Parathe Wala located in South Delhi (SRK’s favourite when he used to live in Delhi) is also a nice “adda” (place) for it.

Chaat:

Oh yes! Literal meaning of the word being “tasting a delicacy”, and totally justified too, once you are exposed to the explosive taste of the spices mixed together in a splendid cocktail of awesomeness. The crunch of “chaat papadi” can literally mend your broken heart (okay, I exaggerated). It won’t mend it but your tongue will be on fire so you’ll definitely forget about the whole thing for a while.

Where to eat?

Bittu Tikki Wala, Karol Bagh; Daulat ki Chaat, Chandni Chowk; Natraj Dahi Bhalle Wala, Chandni Chowk

Butter Chicken:

The dish that literally flows through the veins of Punjabis, the top priority when you are looking to blow some steam off with some daru (alcohol) with your langotiya yaars (childhood friends) or the dish for which you will make up all such silly excuses because it is really that awesome, butter chicken is God’s way of showing himself to us sinners! So scrape off that last piece of meat on that leg piece and say Amen!

  • Where to eat:

There is rarely any restaurant in this country that doesn’t serve this dish but you can visit Moti Mahal, Daryaganj; Havemore, Pandara Road for some mean chicken.

Chole Bhature:

I am just guessing, by this time you must have ordered one of the dishes above? Or must have made plans to gobble them up later? (No?…meh..so what? It’s not like I’m playing Sawal Das Crore ka (not even sure how to translate the same), the Salman Show, remember?..anyways)

If you haven’t, I present to you, the refreshing, the irresistible, the Achilles’ heel of our bombastic nation, Chole Bhature. I don’t even know how to praise this one, the fluffy ball of goodness accompanied by the steamy bowl of that appealing orange gravy! Yummy!!!

  • Where to eat?

Sitaram Diwan Chand, Paharganj; Chache Di Hatti Kamla Nagar.

Momos:

Oh yeah! The steamed dumplings, the source of all power for the legendary Kung Fu Panda! (see what I did there?) The fiery sauce, I like the sauce, it’s unrealistic really, hot enough to burn your tongue away and leave you with just a whole set of teeth and teary eyes, gasping for breath. You just probably remembered your own experience, right? Han? No?

  • Where to eat?

Kamla Nagar Market; Nagaland Food Stall in Dilli Haat;  Sikkim House,  Panchsheel Marg; Cafe Brown Sugar, GK market.

Kebabs:

One awesome thing that Mughals did was marinating chunks of meat with hardcore Indian spices and cook them to death. A quintessential “Dilli” experience, getting kebab’s delivered to cars (I don’t really know, someone told me).
Where to eat?

Alkakori Alkauser, R K Puram; Ustad Moinuddin Kebabs, Lal Kuan; Ghalib Kebab Corner, Nizamuddin; Salim’s Kebabs, Khan Market; Aap Ki Khatir, SDA.

Kulfi:

I feel like I have just served you food online, I don’t know why…it’s weird. So at the end “Kuch Meetha Ho jaaye” (Something sweet for closure). Yes, there are many other alternatives, piping hot Jalebis and Rabri Falooda and Motichoor laddoo and Imli Aam Papad? And Gulabjamun and Rasgulle And custard and blueberry cheesecake and this and that but Kulfi is Kulfi!

  • Where to eat?

Giani di Hatti, Chandni Chowk; Old and Famous Jalebiwala in Chandni Chowk who has served celebrities like Late Raj Kapoor and Indira Gandhi; Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfiwala, Chandni Chowk; Big Chill Cafe, Khan Market; Ghantewala Halwai, Chandni Chowk

So, that completes my list of top 7 Delhi street foods. What are yours?
