Watch: How To Make Authentic Andhra Pappu Chaaru At Home!

What do we love about our South Indian Cuisine?
The comforting flavours, minimal ingredients usage and definitely made with love. While we have several favourite foods, our absolute favourite is the Andhra Pappu Chaaru, a dish wihich is nutritionally complete and is loaded with flavours. It is cooked with several vegetables, a red gram and tamarind based dish, the stew or gravy of Pappu Chaaru is authentic and rich. Here is a simple way to cook authentic Pappu Chaaru.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Red Gram
  • 2 Onions
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • Green Chillies
  • Curry Leaves
  • Coriander Leaves
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt (As per taste)
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • ½ cup Tamarind Juice
  • Water

For Tempering:

  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • Garlic Pods
  • 1 tsp Jeera Seeds
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • Dried Red Chillies
  • Curry Leaves
  • Asafoetida
  • Coriander Leaves

Procedure:

1.Boil 1 cup red gram and keep it aside.

2.Now, take a cooker or a hollow pan and add 2 bowls of water. To this, add chopped onions, tomatoes, handful of green chillies, turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder, curry leaves and coriander leaves. Give it a nice mix.

3.Now cook it covered for 5-7 minutes. Then add tamarind juice to it and once it starts to boil, add the cooked red gram, one bowl of water and mix it well.

4.Check the salt and spice and add salt and red chilly powder if required. Simmer cook it for 5 minutes.

5.Now, to temper the Pappu chaaru, take a pan and heat 1 tsp of ghee. Then add garlic pods, mustard seeds, jeera seeds, dried red chillies, asafoetida, curry leaves and fry them well. Once they are tempered, add it to the Pappu Charu and mix it well.

6.Garnish your Pappu Chaaru with coriander leaves and serve it hot with rice, ghee and papad.
