Kamalathal, also known as Idly Amma, is an octogenarian who lives in Vadivelampalayam, a village in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district. She has been selling Idlis to Migrant laborers for just Rs.1 for the past 30 years. Unconcerned about her profits, she extended her selfless service to the people in need such as daily wage workers and their families.

Inspired by this selfless act, in 2019, Anand Mahindra shared a video about Idly Amma which showcased how She had been running her noble venture from a tiny shanty shop and then promised to help and invest in her business. He tweeted – “One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her, I would be happy to invest in her business and buy her an LPG Fueled Stove”.

Later, in April 2021, Anand Mahindra tweeted yet again and promised that she would have her own house cum workspace and therefore successfully achieved the 1st milestone by registering a land for Idly Amma’s new workspace in Thondamuthur and soon began the construction as promised.

Fortunately, the construction was successfully completed on Mother’s Day and Anand Mahindra kept his word and handed over the new house to Idly Amma.
