Inspired from the new gen writer Chetan Bhagat’s debut novel, Five Point Someone, 3 Idiots was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. With Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and Omi Vaidya in the lead roles, this film made a clean sweep at the box office and the heart of the audience. The film was remade into Tamil as Nanban with Vijay, Srikanth, Jiiva, Illeana D’cruz and Sathyaraj in the lead, which too was a super hit.
However, Mollywood directors have yet to attempt a remake of this film. But, we the movie buffs raced our minds and have picked the actors who would fit the roles of Rancho, Farhaan, Raju, Pia, Viru Sahastrabuddhe and Chatur Ramalingam.

Dulquer Salman – Rancho aka Ranchhoddas Chanchad aka Phunsukh Wangdu
The leader of the gang of friends, he is the mischievous one who takes the strict Director, head on, gaining his wrath. However, when it comes to exams, he is a topper. Played by Aamir Khan in Hindi, we think Dulquer Salman would be a perfect choice for this role in Malayalam. His crazy, mischievous streak and his cool boy looks would be apt for this character.
Nivin Pauly – Farhan Qureshi
An aspiring wild life photographer, he takes up engineering just to appease his father. He loves Rancho’s pranks and is a willing accomplice to most of these. R. Madhavan played this role in 3 Idiots. Given the boy next door looks and the mischievous smile, we feel that this character would be played to perfection if Nivin Pauly is cast in this role.
Unni Mukundan – Raju Rastogi
Hailing from a poor financial background, he aspires to excel in studies and land a good job, which is why he is apprehensive to Rancho’s pranks. A rather serious guy, this character was played by Sharman Joshi in Hindi. With Unni Mukundan’s elegant looks and simple demeanor, we are sure he would do full justice to this role.
Parvathy – Pia
She is a medical student and also happens to be the daughter of the Director of the engineering college where the three friends study. Cast opposite Rancho, she is a modern girl bathed in a bit of tradition. Kareena Kapoor played the role of Pia in Hindi. Given the versatility that Parvathy has displayed in her movies and her amazing chemistry with Dulquer Salman, she would be a perfect pick for the female lead in the remake.
Siddique – Viru Sahastrabuddhe
An extremely versatile actor who can carry out any role with total aplomb, we are sure that there is no one better than Siddique to play the role of the strict Director of the college. Boman Irani played this role perfectly in Hindi. However, we feel that Siddique would definitely add his own touch, were he cast in this role.
Aju Varghese – Chatur Ramalingam
Played by Omi Vaidya in Hindi, the character believes in memorizing everything and does not believe in Rancho’s unconventional approach to education. This character offers some comic respite and also has shades of grey which is why we want to pick Aju Varghese for this role. His comic timing is inimitable. However, we want to see how he would portray the shades of grey.
Now that we have picked the lead cast for the film, we surely hope that a Malayalam director would go ahead and remake 3 Idiots. Directors, are you listening?
