Why Rahman doesn’t do Telugu Films?

A.R. Rahman is undoubtedly the biggest name in Indian music today.

Not many know that he began his career assisting Koti with his music. Thankfully, film producers in Telugu have helped us in tripping on his music in our own language, though dubbed. But deep within, there’s always regret – that Rahman doesn’t do too many standalone Telugu films. Nobody really knows why Rahman doesn’t sign too many Telugu projects. It can’t be budgets, because he does smaller budget Hindi films too (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Water).

Rahman has done only a handful of Telugu projects, and sadly, the films mostly received lukewarm to negative response at the box office except ONE. Here are some of the films he worked on, which didn’t really set the box office on fire.

SUPER POLICE

In spite of the film boasting a star cast of Venkatesh, Nagma, and Soundarya (even though she dies fifteen minutes into her role), it couldn’t achieve much success. This was the first film that Rahman did the entire music for.

PALNATI POURUSHAM

Web

While it was a remake of Tamil film Kizhakku Cheemayile, Rahman provided an original score for the soundtrack of the film. However, the film couldn’t compete with the other blockbusters of the year, like Hello Brother, Yamaleela, and Govinda Govinda. A Mediocre one!

GANGMASTER

Web

Maybe only T. Subbirami Reddy remembers that he made this movie. Rajasekhar, who would later go on to carve a niche in cop movies, was still finding his feet in the industry. The audience didn’t like the film, and the chemistry between Rajasekhar and Nagma turned out to be Astrophysics for the movie-goers. Didn’t work at the Box Office.

NAANI

Web

This was a large-budget movie and even the presence of Mahesh Babu and Amisha Patel didn’t help the film’s fortunes. The songs did well, but the film sank. However, the videos are still watched by frustrated engineering students when their roommates are away. 😉

NEE MANASU NAKU TELUSU

Web

In the early 2000s, Tarun was having a dream run at the box office. Trisha had just started delivering hits, and it made sense to cast the two of them in a musical romance with Rahman giving the tunes. Unfortunately, the film sank.

YE MAAYA CHESAVE

Web

The film was simultaneously made in Tamil by Gowtham Menon, although the endings were changed for both the versions. While Simbu faces heartbreak in the Tamil version, Nag Chaitanya sees some hope at the end of the tunnel. Ye Maaya Chesave was just the ONE exception we mentioned.

KOMARAM PULI

Web

Most Telugu heroes have played police officers, and it was only a matter of time before Pawan Kalyan too joined the brigade. However, most audiences felt the stuff he did in Komaram Puli was similar to what NBK does. And frankly, who can play NBK better than NBK? And it was yet another flop!

Rahman is yet to do another standalone Telugu film.

Deep within, there’s a wish in every Telugu film fan’s heart. That Rahman does another solo Telugu project. Till then, please go watch that video from Nani again!!

Chakkera Ekkada Nakkina, Kanipettava Cheemalu Takkuna… 😀
