Shiva : 30 Years Of An Epic Saga, Which Changed The Phase Of TFI

30 years has passed by this phenomenal Indian Indian Telugu-language crime drama film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma in his directorial debut. It starred Akkineni Nagarjuna, Amala, and Raghuvaran. The film’s basic plot, adapted from Bruce Lee’s Way of the Dragon (1972). No matter which generation you belong to. This movie is a must watch for the plot, acting, characterization and the intense screenplay! This movie influenced students, politics, crime drama, movie plots, actors/actresses and many things so much that a phase of Telugu cinema has seen a change.

• It was the only Telugu film screened at the International Film Festival of India, held on 19 January 1990.

• In addition to the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Telugu, Siva won three Nandi Awards: Best Director (Varma), Best First Film of a Director, and Best Dialogue Writer (Bharani).

• A documentary titled Exploring Shiva after 25 Years was released on the film’s silver anniversary; it is the first documentary about a Telugu film.

• It was Nagarjuna’s debut and Amala’s last film as a lead role in Bollywood.

• The movie is inspired by real life incidents happened around Varma during his days in Siddhartha Engineering College, so much so that all the reel names of characters were names of his friends at college.

• It is interesting to notice that ace director Puri Jagannadh is cast as one of Shiva’s friends in the Hindi remake of the film. Puri Jagannad was assisting RGV at that time

• The cycle chain scene in the movie became a huge hit and people started imitating this style in further movies too. This chain is now owned by J.D.Chakravarthy.

• This film inspired many to pursue their careers as directors. Sreenu Vaitla, V.V.Vinayak, Sudheer Varma, and S.S.Rajamouli. Rajamouli composed the action sequence before the intermission of his directorial debut Student No. 1 (2002) inspired by Varma’s work in Shiva and followed the shot division of the cycle-chain scene for the same.

• RGV had an art in the actions scenes that were made so realistic. Action scenes in movies are always accompanied by Dishoom and Diskhyaun and many other weird sounds in sync. But Shiva changed all of that. The punches and kicks delivered didn’t have any weird sound effects accompanying them. Nor did it see the actors getting up after being brutally hit, as is the norm in our cinema.

• Ram Gopal Varma had never assisted anyone before Shiva, except for a brief stint with director B Gopal. Neither did he go to any film school to hone his film making skills. He learned his craft by watching various movies in the video cassette parlor which he ran in Hyderabad, which was an extremely popular hangout for film buffs.

• The lift scene in the climax was shot in Chennai. The rest of the movie was taken only in Hyderabad.
