12 South Cinema Legends Who Were Honoured With Highest Cinema Honorary ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’

Dadasaheb Phalke Award – Highest Cinema Award presented to filmmakers, actors and others who are involves in filmmaking. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is honoured for their “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

And here are the South cinema legendary people who won this prestigious and highest cinema award as a token of gratitude, honour and their contribution towards Indian Cinema…

1. Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy – Telugu Director & Producer – 1974

Bommireddy Narasimha ReddyTelugu director and producer, who directed movies like Malliswari, Rangula Ratnam, and produced Sumangali, Vandemataram. He produced 50+ movies and gave some timeless classics and contribution towards Indian Cinema through.

2. Paidi Jairaj – Hindi Actor-Director from Telugu States – 1980

Jairaj was born in Sircilla of Hyderabad State (present-day Telangana) on 28 September 1909. known for his works primarily in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati language films, and Telugu theatre. He holds the record of having the longest career in Indian films.

3. L.V. Prasad (Telugu, Hindi, Tamil) – Producer & Director of Telugu Cinema – 1982

L. V. Prasad, was an Indian film producer, actor, director, cinematographer and businessman. He was one of the pioneers of Indian cinema and is the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest Award for films in India. He founded Prasads Group in 1956, which included the Prasad Art Pictures, Prasad Studios, Prasads IMAX and L V Prasad Eye Institute.

4. B. Nagi Reddy (Telugu) – Director & Producer – 1986

Producer and director who directed all time classics like Pathala Bhairavi, Missamma, Maya Bazaar (1957), Gundamma Katha (1962), Maduve Madinodu (1965-Kannada). He established Vijaya Vauhini studios in Chennai which is Asia’s biggest film studio at that time.

5. Akkinein Nageswara Rao (Telugu)- Actor, Producer – 1991

ANR is the only one to have a 75-year long career as an actor becoming one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema. He is considered one of the greatest and most successful actors of Indian cinema and one of the two pillars of Telugu Cinema, along with N. T. Rama Rao. Nageswara Rao received seven state Nandi Awards, and five Filmfare Awards South. He received the DadaSaheb Phalke Award, the highest Indian award in the field of cinema in 1991.

6. Rajkumar (Kannada)- Actor, Producer (Kannada) -1995

Rajkumar pride of Kannadigas is one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema and a versatile actor, he is considered a cultural icon and holds a matinée idol status in the Kannada diaspora, among whom he is popularly adulated as Nata Sarvabhouma (emperor of actors), Bangarada Manushya (man of gold), Vara Nata (gifted actor). He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1983 and also received several national and state awards.

7. Sivaji Ganesan (Tamil) – Actor, Producer – 1996

Tamil superstar Sivaji Ganesan known for his versatility and the variety of roles he depicted on screen, which gave him also the Tamil nickname Nadigar Thilagam (transl. the pride of actors). In a career that spanned close to five decades, he had acted in 288 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.

8. Adoor Gopalkrishnan (Malayalam) – Director & Producer – 2004

Adoor is a notable filmmaker, one who pioneered the new wave in Malayalam cinema during the 1970s. In a career spanning over five decades, Adoor has made only 12 feature films to date. His films are made in the Malayalam language and often depict the society and culture of his native state Kerala.

9. D.Ramanaidu (Telugu) – Producer & Director – 2009

Popularly known as Movie Mughal of Indian Cinema, who produced more than 150 movies in 13 Indian languages and holds the Guinness World Record for producing more movies as producer.

10. K.Balachander (Tamil, Telugu & Hindi) – 2010

K. Balachander, legendary director known for his distinct film-making style, and the Indian film industry knew him as a master of unconventional themes and hard-hitting contemporary subject matter. Balachander’s films are well known for their portrayal of women as bold personalities and central characters.

11. K.Viswanath (Telugu, Tamil 7 Hindi) Director & Producer – 2016

K. Viswanath path breaking filmmaker from Telugu Cinema. In a film career of 60 years Viswanath garu has directed fifty three feature films in a variety of genres, including films based on performing arts, visual arts, and aesthetics.

12. Rajinikanth – Indian Actor – 2020

Indian Superstar who have a huge fan base across India and Other countries in the World. Popularly known as Thalaiva in Tamil Cinema, his mannerisms, screen presence, dialogue delivery and even walking style has a separate fanbase.

Baashha (1995) in which Rajinikanth played a crime boss, was a major commercial success in his career and earned him a ‘god-like’ status in Tamil Nadu. Sivaji (2007) was the third Indian film to enter the 100 Crore Club. After earning ₹26 crore (equivalent to ₹63 crore or US$8.9 million in 2019) for his role in Sivaji, Rajinikanth received his career best highest salary at the time.
