The world of cinema is that of a make believe. Thus, the actors are often required to go that extra mile to ensure that they look convincing on screen. Over the years, there have been many actors who had no qualms whatsoever about experimenting with their looks and donning new avatars in accordance to their roles.

Here is our pick of some of the actors whose transformation really left the audience dumbfounded.

Sivaji Ganesan – Navarathri

This movie was one of its kinds and proved what a powerhouse of talent Sivaji Ganesan was. He played nine distinct roles in the movie with each character depicting one of the navarasas. He donned a distinct avatar for each character which included a widower, a drunkard, a compassionate doctor, an angry gunman, an innocent villager, an elegant actor, a leper, a brave commissioner and a bridegroom in the movie. He actually created a record with this film.

Kamal Haasan – Dasavatharam, Avvai Sanmughi, Apoorva Sahodarangal, Indian, Anbe Sivam, Guna

For Ulaganayagan, the list of avatars that he has donned for different films is quite long. He played ten diverse characters in Dasavatharam. His avatar of a middle aged woman in Avvai Sanmughi is one that no one can forget. On the other hand, the dwarf in Apoorva Sahodarangal is also still fresh in audience’s memory. His makeup of an old man in Indian along with the matching antics was totally convincing.

Vikram – Sethu, Anniyan, I, Pithamagan, Kasi

Chiyaan Vikram is an extremely versatile actor and he has changed his looks in many of his movies, to suit the character. In Sethu, his avatar as a mentally unstable person in the asylum brought tears to the audience’s eyes. He totally nailed it as a blind person in Kasi. His avatar as the psychopath killer in Anniyan sent shivers down the spines of his fans whereas his deglamorized look in Pithamagan is something to look forward to. He took this a step further with I in which he played a role of a man suffering from a very curious disease.

Suriya – Ghajini, Perazhagan, Vaaranam Aayiram

This good looking actor got himself a hunchback for the role in Perazhagan. He wowed the audience with his six packs in Ghajini and then surprised them as a bald tattooed man out to seek his revenge. He was totally convincing as the aged father in Vaaranam Aayiram.

Arya – Naan Kadavul

With his chocolate boy looks and light colored eyes, Arya seems to be a perfect choice for romantic roles. However, he proved everyone wrong when he donned the avatar of an Aghori Sadhu in Naan Kadavul with long unkempt hair and beard and body smeared with ash.

Sarathkumar – Kanchana

Renowned for his macho looks and enticing fighting sequence, Sarathkumar shocked the Tamil movie lovers when he played the role of a transgender in the film Kanchana. His look when teamed with his histrionics was so convincing that this has become one of the finest roles played by him.

Actors change their hair styles and eye colors for their roles. However, these actors went ahead and transformed themselves completely to get under the skin of their characters.
