Built by Maratha ruler Bajirao 1 for his wife Kashibai, this fort was a center of Marathas and Peshwas till independence. The youngest son of Nana Saheb, Narayanarao 16 years old, was his successor. As he was a minor, his uncle Raghunathrao was in-charge of the affairs of the state until he became an adult. This rose to jealousy and Raghunathrao’s wife arranged for tribals to kill Narayanrao, the legal heir. The young boy ran towards his uncle’s place to save him, screaming “save me uncle”, but was killed and dumped into the river.
