According to Folklore, the presence of black sand at this beach is because ash created by burning the dead got mixed with white sand of the beach and turned dark in shade. It is known to become a devil’s paradise after sunset. Rumors have been around that those who tried to test this and stayed back overnight, either never came back or came with the worst supernatural experience possible.

This story dates back to the late 1990s, around 5000 mineworkers lost their lives here due to inappropriate mining practices. The workers succumbed to a painful death coughing and lung disorder. Ever since then people have reported mysterious incidents at the site like helicopter crashes or hearing wailing and crying in pain.

Built by Maratha ruler Bajirao 1 for his wife Kashibai, this fort was a center of Marathas and Peshwas till independence. The youngest son of Nana Saheb, Narayanarao 16 years old, was his successor. As he was a minor, his uncle Raghunathrao was in-charge of the affairs of the state until he became an adult. This rose to jealousy and Raghunathrao’s wife arranged for tribals to kill Narayanrao, the legal heir. The young boy ran towards his uncle’s place to save him, screaming “save me uncle”, but was killed and dumped into the river. Now every full moonlight people hear sounds believed to be of Narayanrao screaming for help or running across corridors.

The story around this haunted place goes that the minister of the state fell in love with a girl from the village and had threatened to impose huge taxes upon the entire village unless they married her to him. To protect the honor of the girl, the chief of Kulhara and surrounding areas abandoned their villages and cursed the land to remain unoccupied.
