Syria- we all know Syria as infamous land from where ISIS functions. It has been more than five years since Syria is undergoing civil war- between President’s Asad’s supporters and those opposing it, with ISIS as another major threat. Amidst all this, innocent civilians of Syria are bearing the brunt of all this for no faults of their own. Air Strikes, bombings, fire are everyday reality, forcing Syrians to flee to some other countries. Syrian refugee question is one of the major global challenges of recent history.
The resulting chaos, on one hand is too much to bear, while on the other, a small group of ordinary civilians have taken this as a challenge and are rescuing people from under the rubble. They call themselves, WHITE HELMETS. They are members of Syria Civil Defence, and according to the THE WHITE HELMETS web page, “When the bombs rain down, they rush in. In a place where public services no longer function these unarmed volunteers risk their lives to help anyone in need – regardless of their religion or political views.”
According to Newsweek, “There are more than 2,800 White Helmets, including 80 women, all volunteers who work full time and get paid a $150 monthly stipend. So far, according to Raed al-Saleh, 33, the founder of the White Helmets, they have saved more than 40,000 lives.”
Purely driven by humanitarian concerns, these unsung heroes of Syria deserve to be known and acknowledged. Here we leave with a video to notice the humanitarians work they have been doing amidst the chaos.
