10 Powerful Female Authors Who Should Be In Your Reading List

Literature has a lot of phenomenal women writers who have contributed to its treasure. Breaking social constraints, these women writers poured their lives and ideas into their writing. Their writing an amalgamation of poetry, magic and finesse. Here are some of the writers and their works:

Virginia Woolf:

Virginia Woolf

One of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century, Virginia Woolf’s most famous works include Mrs Dalloway, To The Lighthouse, Orlando and A Room of One’s Own.

Jane Austen:

An English novelist whose works of romantic fiction are still widely read across the world. Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility and Emma are some of her most popular works.

Sylvia Plath:

She was an American novelist, poet and short story writer. She battled depression through almost all her adulthood and this reflected in her works. Bell Jar is one of her most famous works.

Kamala Das:

She was a noted Malayali poet and short story writer. Das’first book of poetry, ‘Summer in Calcutta’ was a breath of fresh air in Indian English poetry. Her view of Feminism, guilt free writing are often compared to Sylvia Plath’s works.

Harper Lee:

Her novel ‘To kill a mockingbird’ dealt with serious issues of rape and racial inequality, and won her the Pulitzer prize in 1960

Enid Blyton:

Our childhood would remain incomplete without the magic of her books and her storytelling. The Magic Faraway Tree, The Malory Towers and The Famous Five are her famous works.

Agatha Christie:

Another favourite from our formative years, Agatha Christie is known for weaving some of the most intricate and thrilling narratives in her 66 detective novels.

J K Rowling:

She’s known throughout the world foe giving us the Harry Potter series, without which our teenage years would have been devoid of that magical world.

Anita Desai:

An Indian novelist and recipient of a Sahitya Akademi Award in the year in 1978 for her novel Fire in the Mountain. She writes about the Indian way of living and our relations. Some of her famous works are The Village by the sea, In Custody, Clear light of Day.

Chitra Banarjee Divakaruni:

An Indian- American novelist. Her works are mostly based on Indian culture, society and the relations. She writes about Feminism and makes her female characters very strong. Some of her famous works are Arranged marriage, The mistress of spices and Sister of my heart.
