The Spices Board of India will set up the country’s first spice museum in Kochi.
It will trace the history and growth of the spices industry.

The museum will also showcase over 30 raw spices and culinary herbs and show how they are cultivated, processed, stored and quality assessed. There will be paintings, pictures, brochures and books. Visitors will be able to buy authentic Indian spices.

A Jayathilak, chairman, Spices Board, will lay the foundation stone of the museum Today.
“The museum will be an information centre on quality spices to attract sailors and overseas tourists,” he said. The Cochin Port Trust allotted land to set up the museum.

The museum is not the first of its kind in the world though. The Spicy’s Museum in Hamburg and the Longstanton Spice Museum in the United Kingdom are its predecessors. There is also talk of a warehouse being transformed into a Spice Museum in the city of Lorient in France.
