The World Health Organisation (WHO) last year announced that India has 13 of the most polluted cities in the world, and this was leading to premature deaths and physical problems for the residents.

To tackle this problem of pollution, the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi has come up with a new scheme called Odd-Even, where vehicles having odd and even numbers will be allowed to ply on the roads on alternate days.

However, the announcement has been met with a lot of criticism and sarcasm on Twitter and other social media platforms. This is not a very unique scheme, as other cities and countries have tried this earlier. Most notably, Paris had tried this system to regulate the traffic a few months back, but they cancelled the initiative after a day, choosing instead to ban all cars for a day in Paris so that people could enjoy the city without traffic and congestion.

Under Arvind Kejriwal’s system, there will be separate days when Odd numbered cars can use the roads, and other days when even numbered cars will be allowed to use the roads. The initiative is being criticized as a lot of people are accusing the government of causing trouble to middle class consumers, as rich families have more than two cars in their households.

Twitter and other social media platforms spent a good part of yesterday trolling Arvind Kejriwal for his initiative. What do you think of the Odd-Even initiative proposed by the Delhi government?
