VVS Laxman, who has been immortalised by his magical innings of 281 against Australia, has won the unique achievement of his innings being declared the greatest Test innings in the last 50 years.
VVS Laxman scored the runs in the second innings, after Australia had asked India to follow on. Supported by Rahul Dravid, India put on enough runs to outdo the lead, and also went on to win the Test. The match is considered one of the landmarks of Indian cricket, and India’s rise to the top of cricketing charts is often said to have begun from that Test onwards.
The match was played in 2001 at the Eden Gardens Kolkata, and Laxman’s innigns was declared the Best by a panel of players, commentators and journalists at ESPN’s magazine Cricket Monthly. Shane Warne was one of the members of the panel, and he was also a member of the opposition team during the match.
