Google’s popular mobile operating system, Android, is about to get an upgrade. This presents a distinct chance, for those who care to make an indelible mark.

Google is crowdsourcing names for the following version of Android. During its I/O convention this month, it invited users to help name the newest version. Android nomenclature has, since its third release in 2009, followed a confectionary motif in alphabetic order. So far there have now been Marshmallow, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich. It is now the turn of N, and Malayalis are smacking their lips in anticipation.

A name suggested by users, which gets the most variety of votes, will although Google could go with another name, what Android N be finally called. While Indians went berserk indicating everything ‘narkol naru’ to Maharashtra’s favourite ‘Nankhatai’, the excitement lasted for just a couple of days and soon fizzled out from Twitter and Facebook. It was clear that Nankhatai or Naru wasn’t going to get anywhere close to winning the race.

On the other hand, the Malayalis had a different strategy up their sleeves. A favourite Malayali bite–Neyyappam–was also one of the names proposed during the first social media frenzy following the announcement of Google. Nevertheless, unlike their peers from other states, Malayalis were determined to give an earnest opportunity to the race. For many, this is sufficient evidence that Neyyappam is leading the race while Google has not said anything on the matter.

Of what Neyyappam is for those unaware, here’s what professionally made Neyyappams look like.

Great homemade Neyyappams may look like this.

It’s a deep fried bite made from rice flour, ghee, and jaggery.
