This cave is a monolithic example of Indian rock-cut architecture and is famous throughout the country. They are located in Undavalli of Guntur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The caves are located 6 km south-west of Vijayawada. These caves were carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside in the 4th to 5th centuries A.D.They serve as one of the finest testimonials to the Viswakarma sthapathis. 1. There are several caves and the best known largest one has four stories with a huge recreated statue of Vishnu in a reclining posture, sculpted from a single block of granite inside the second floor.
2. These caves also stand as an example of how Buddhist artifacts and stupas were converted into Hindu Temples.
3. Initially, the caves were shaped as a Jain abode and the first-floor abode still retains the Jain style.
4. A historical record also mentions that Undavalli Caves was once a site of Bhikkhu (Buddhist monks) monastery complex.
5. These caves do not belong to just one particular region. They have been taken over and developed by various kings.
6. There is another cave which is dedicated to Hindu Trinities: Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara.
