Writing With Fire is the first Indian documentary to be nominated in the category. It has scored a nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category at the 94th Academy Awards.

1. Writing with Fire is a 2021 Indian documentary film directed by filmmakers Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas.

2. Writing with Fire is about ‘Khabar Lahariya’ and its transition from print to digital. Khabar Lahariya is a rural newspaper run by Dailt Women. This is the only news agency in India run by Dalit women.

3. Writing with Fire follows Meera and her fellow journalists armed with smartphones, they report from some of the most difficult regions of the country, risking everything to speak truth to power.

4. Writing with Fire journeys with Meera and her band of sisters for over five years – questioning patriarchy, investigating incompetence of the police force, and reporting stories about victims of caste and gender violence.

5. It hasn’t been released in India. But it premiered in several international festivals, and won 28 awards, including the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award: Impact for Change and the World Cinema Documentary Competition Audience Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

6. Writing With Fire is the first Indian documentary to be nominated in the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature category.

7. It has garnered excellent reviews all over the world. Variety reviewed the film as a “Rousing, inspirational tribute to the pride of grassroots Indian journalism.” The Washington Post called it “the most inspiring journalism movie – maybe ever.”
