Apart From Rahman, Here Are The Other Indians Who Have Also Won An Oscar


When one speaks of Oscars in India, it is most of the time associated with Rahman. Oscars is considered as the most prestigious award to be achieved in the field of cinema worldwide. Though there have been instances when Indian films were nominated for Oscars, there is no film that won an award under the Best Foreign Film Category. But, there are few people who have achieved it. But, there are few other Indians who have also won an Academy award or more popularly known as Oscar Awards.

Bhanu Athaiya

She is the first Indian to win an Academy Award. She has won the Best costume design for the movie “Gandhi” in 1982.

Satyajit Ray

He is considered as one of the finest directors in Bengali and Indian cinema. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Satyajit Ray an Oscar in 1992 for Lifetime Achievement. He is an inspiration to film makers across the globe.


The Legendary composer and singer shared his Oscar with A.R Rahman for Best Original song (Jai Ho) from the movie Slumdog Millionaire. He proved his mettle as this made a sensation.

Resul Pookutty

He is an Indian film sound designer and editor. He has bagged the golden lady for Best sound mixing at Oscars from the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

He is the soul of Indian music.  He is a Song writer, Singer, Composer and a music
producer who is considered as one of India’s most respected Musician. He has won Best Original song and Best Original Score for the song “Jai Ho”.

He was born in Britain and brought up in India. He is an Indian-American software inventor who jointly won the Academy Award for scientific and technical achievement in 2016.

Leon is an Indian-American computer graphics technician who won the Academy Award for scientific and technical achievement. He is a Tamilian and he has worked for many commercial films like including Stuart Little, the Spider-Man film series, the Men In Black film series and many more.
