Pulsar is LUB: A Nostalgic Story, History & Evolution Of Most Loved Bike Over The Last 2 Decades


Back in those days, Bajaj Pulsar became a motorcycle icon for the youth of India. Before the introduction of the Pulsar, the Indian motorcycle market trend was towards fuel efficient, small capacity motorcycles. Hero Honda, launched an entry-level 150cc bike, the CBZ. It became an instant hit. Bajaj being a competitor in the market had to bring its a-game into the arena. This is where the Bajaj Pulsar comes in.And the history begun, Bajaj Pulsar Twins were introuduced into the market.

1. 2001 – Pulsar 150, Pulsar 180 Classic

The first generation Pulsar bikes are 150/180cc. The first-ever Pulsar bike consisted of a traditional rounded headlamp.

2. 2003 – Bajaj Pulsar UG-1

In 2003, Bajaj upgraded by changing the rounded headlamp and replaced it with twin headlamps. And Bajaj equipped DTSi technology for the bikes to have more fuel efficiency.

3. 2005 – Bajaj Pulsar UG-2

Till now, the Pulsar 150 and 180 used to look the same. So Bajaj introduced blacked alloy wheels in the 180, and the Pulsar 180 goes all black. And where as in the Pulsar 150, they were still grey.

4. 2006 – Bajaj Pulsar UG-3

One of the biggest updates for Pulsar. This included the introduction of an all-digital speedometer and engine kill switch.

5. 2007 – Bajaj Pulsar 200 DTS-i, Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi

Pulsar 200 is almost similar to the older designs only varying in powerful engine setup. Whereas Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi had handlebars, projector headlamps, split seats and the most powerful engine of all the designs till then, and a disc brake too.

6. 2009 – Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS

Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS launched with a smaller engine power. The first bike in India to have four-valve DTS-i technology.

7. 2012 – Bajaj Pulsar 200NS

NS stands for Naked Sports. Bajaj partnered with KTM and introduced the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS. The bike had a mono-shock suspension, and for the first time Liquid-cooled, DTS-i, triple spark engine was used.

8. 2015 (March) – Bajaj Pulsar RS200

This model got Daytime Running Lights, new digital-analog instrument cluster and an optional ABS. This bike consists of too much bulky design and it has stickers all over it. This was a major attraction for the Indian youth in those days.

9. 2015 (April) – Bajaj Pulsar AS200, Pulsar AS150

These two models were soon launched after the launch of RS200.

10. 2017 – Bajaj Pulsar NS160

Smaller 160cc, oil-cooled engine with DTS-i tech was good for producing 15hp of peak power.

11. 2019 – Bajaj Pulsar 125 Neon

In terms of Pulsar 125 design, you could easily mistake it for the Pulsar 150 or 180.

12. 2021 – Bajaj Pulsar NS125

The Bajaj Pulsar NS125 is the third, latest and the smallest NS in Bajaj’s lineup of Pulsars.

13. 2021 – Bajaj Pulsar F250 and N250

20 years after launching the original Pulsar 150 and 180. Bajaj has launched the Pulsar F250 and N250. Now, these are the biggest pulsars to date with their brand new 249.07cc single-cylinder engine.
