8 Reasons Behind SRH Team Flop Show In IPL 2023

Sunrisers Hyderabad was the strongest team on paper this season. But their performance disappointed everyone. OrangeArmy turned up in huge numbers and came to Uppal to support their team. SRH lost 6 out of 7 home matches. There are many reasons for their failure. Here are a few reasons for their unsuccessful outing this season.
1. Continuous Changes in their Opening Pair
SRH has played with 7 opening pairs this season. This number is huge. SRH played the following players as openers this season: Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Anmolpreet Singh, Harry Brook, and Rahul Tripathi. Sadly none of them performed well. Abhishek and Mayank opened the innings in the first match. Abhi was dismissed for a duck. Later Abhi was injured and was out for a couple of matches. Anmol got a chance in the 2nd match, he played an ODI knock and he was dropped. Harry Brook was given a chance to open and he performed well in only 1 match on a flat pitch. Mayank was dropped later for his poor performance and in the previous match Tripathi came up the order and he too failed.
2. Mayank and Tripathi’s dry outing
SRH bought Mayank Agarwal for 8.25CR in the IPL auction 2023. He played 9 matches this season and scored 187 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 114. These stats sum up his performance this season. He hasn’t scored a single 50 this season.
Rahul Tripathi played all the matches this season. Barring his match-winning performance against PBKS, he failed in every match. He scored 273 runs at an average of 22 and a strike rate of 128. Rahul Tripathi is a much better player than these stats and he can win the matches single-handedly. Hope he performs well next season.
3. MARKRAM’S CAPTAINCY
Markram was called MARKRAMUDU by the ORANGEARMY before the start of this season. They elevated him to Rama of SRH, but he failed both as a captain and player. Markram won the Trophy as a captain in SA 20 league this year. But he didn’t carry his form from that league. He scored 235 runs at an average of 21 with a strike rate of 123. Though he is a great captain, Markram’s bowling changes and fielding placements were also terrible this season. He won many trophies as a captain and SRH must trust him and must not drop him this next season.
4. Inconsistent foreign contingent
Harry Brook and Marco Jansen failed to deliver match-winning performances this season. Brooksy was bought for 13.25Cr this season. He played 10 matches this season and scored 190 runs this season. He scored a 100 against KKR at Eden Gardens. That was the only match he performed well this season. He completely failed this season. His inability to play spinners was much talked about this season. Marco Jansen played 8 matches and he picked 10 wickets at an economy of around 10. He played as an allrounder, but he never performed with the bat this season.
5. Improper usage of our Pace batteries
Umran Malik and Karthik Tyagi are the rising stars of the Indian Cricket Team. Umran Malik was the highest wicket-taker of SRH in 2022. Markram and the management didn’t handle Umran well this season. Since he is a 150+ bowler, he might be expensive, but he is an X-Factor player. He played 7 matches but he completed his 4 overs quota in just 1 match. Tyagi was injured for the first half of this season. But he was available for the 2nd half. He played just 2 matches. Let’s hope that SRH management will make use of these pace batteries next season.
6. Spinners Silence
Apart from Markande, none of the SRH spinners bowled well this season. Washington Sundar played 7 matches and he picked up just 3 wickets. He didn’t bat well too. He was injured and he was out for the 2nd half of the Season. Akeal Hosein played a match and he went for 40 runs. Abhishek Sharma was hit for 5 sixes and that changed the match.
He picked just 2 wickets this season. These players are talented, let’s hope they rise next season. The bowlers collectively failed this season.
7. Choking in winning games:
SRH bottled matches against DC KKR and MI. SRH didn’t chase 24 of the last 2 overs against a weak MI line-up. SRH didn’t chase 145 runs on their home ground. 38 off 30 were needed against KKR. Markram and Co bottled this game too. Samad couldn’t finish both games against MI and KKR.
8. Coaches consistency in taking wrong decisions
Brian Lara was a huge setback for OrangeArmy this season. He couldn’t read the pitches well. SRH lost 6 out of 7 home games. He failed to analyze the home ground. He played a pacer-heavy team on spinning tracks. He dropped Phillips after playing a match-winning knock. He changed the opening pairs. He didn’t utilize the bench strength. The youngsters like Tyagi, Umran, Sanvir, Nitish, and Vivranth were not given proper opportunities. The riser’s season was messed up by him.
Some positives for the OrangArmy this season:
The only positive in SRH’s batting this season is Henrich Klassen. He scored 430 runs at a strike rate of 180 this season. He scored 2 50’s and a century this season. He consistently performed in every match this season. He saved SRH from humiliation. Bhuvi and Nattu’s death bowling was good in some matches. Samad finished the game against RR and he looked confident after that game. Mayank Markande was a stand-out player. He has an economy of just 7.8 after playing 10 games.
SRH must make proper use of resources and they must give a proper comeback next season.
