These Andhra Podulu Or Spicy Powders Are Great For Breakfasts!

What is that one thing at a breakfast table we all loved eating while growing up?
Yes, you got it right. It is Podi/Spicy Powders. They are great accompaniments to a traditional South Indian breakfast. They have been a part of our cuisine for years now and we cannot imagine our breakfast without these.
They are commonly eaten with Idies, Dosas or Uttapams. They are mixed with a few drops of ghee or oil and they take your humble breakfast to another level. Loaded with spices, they add a kick to your food. So, if you love these powders as much as we do, then go on, continue reading and make some for yourselves at home.

1.Velluli Karam

Ingredients:

  • Garlic
  • Red Dry Chillies
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • ½ cup Jeera Seeds
  • ½ cup Coriander Seeds
  • Salt (As per taste)

Procedure:

In a pan, add some oil and fry dried red chillies for two minutes. Transfer them to a plate or bowl. Then, in the same pan, add jeera seeds and coriander seeds and fry them to for two minutes. Transfer them to a plate or a bowl. Let the red chillies and seeds cool down.

Once, they are no longer hot, take a mixie jar and transfer these ingredients and add salt and garlic. Grind them to a fine powder.

Your Velluli Karam is now ready. Store it in an air-tight container.

2.Idly Karam Podi

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp Urad Dal
  • 2 tbsp Bengal Gram
  • 1 cup Coriander Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Jeera Seeds
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • Tamarind
  • 1 cup Dry Red Chillies
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • Curry Leaves
  • ½ tsp Hing
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt (As per taste)

Procedure:

In a pan, heat oil and add urad dal and Bengal gram. Fry them properly and add coriander seeds, jeera seeds and mustard seeds.

Once all the seeds are tempered add a small piece of tamarind and dried red chillies. Finally, add curry leaves, hing, turmeric powder and salt. Fry all the ingredients together.

Transfer this mixture to a bowl/vessel and allow it to cool down. Once they are cooled down, grind them to a fine powder.

Your Idly Karam Podi is now ready. Store the powder in an air-tight container.
