1. Sandeep Unnikrishnan came from a Malayali family residing in Bangalore. He was the only son of retired ISRO officer K. Unnikrishnan Nair and Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan

2. Sandeep Unnikrishnan always wanted to join the Indian army. He was scared of water in his school days but learned to swim when he joined the Indian Army

3. Sandeep Unnikrishnan joined the National Defence Academy (India) (NDA), Pune, Maharashtra in 1995. His NDA friends remember him as “selfless”, “generous” and “calm and composed

4. Major Sandeep was part of “Operation Vijay” Against Pakistan. During Operation Vijay on July 1, 1999, he was regarded positively at the forward posts in the face of heavy artillery firing & small arms fire by Pakistan troops

5. After serving in different locations including Siachen, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat (during the 2002 Gujarat Riots), Hyderabad and Rajasthan, he was selected to join the National Security Guards. After training, Sandeep was assigned as the training officer of the 51 Special Action Group (51 SAG) of NSG, in January 2007

6. On November 4, 2008, Sandeep was the team commander of 51 SAG which was deployed at the Taj Mahal Palace to rescue the hostages. To execute the operation, Unnikrishnan had entered the hotel with a group of 10 commandos

7. Unnikrishnan saved his fellow commando Sunil Yadav after he was shot in both legs, who was severely injured. Sandeep was shot from behind which resulted in severe injuries. He kept fighting till the very end before succumbing to his wounds. He died on the spot on November 28 at the age of 31

8. “Do not come up, I will handle them,” were probably the last words that Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told his men as he was hit by bullets while engaging terrorists inside the Taj. The funeral of Major Unnikrishnan was held with full military honors. He was awarded the Ashoka Chakra on January 26, 2009

NSG named the firing range at Mumbai as Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Firing Range & Road in Yelahanka New Town, Bangalore, was renamed Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road in his honor
