Indian films made their entry into the overseas markets in the 1940s. The first Indian film to have been released worldwide was Mehboob Khan’s Aan (1952). It was released in 17 languages and 28 countries. Mehboob Khan’s later Academy Award-nominated Mother India (1957) was an unprecedented success in overseas markets.
