For a director his film is like a baby, which he nurtures with utmost love and care. However, there are times when his idea simply fails to enamor the audience. Over the years there have been a number of such movies which in spite of their director’s passionate approach, great idea, ensemble cast and fiery performances just did not make their mark.
Take a look at some of these movies which are actually very good but somehow flopped at the box office.
Hey Ram
This Kamal Hassan directorial venture had everything positive going for it. With actors like Kamal Hassan, Rani Mukherjee, Shahrukh Khan, Vasundhara Das, Naseeruddin Shah, Showkar Janaki, Abbas, Girish Karnad and many other big wigs in the movie and soul rending music from Illaiyaraja, there was hardly anything that could go wrong with this film. Set in the backdrop of India post partition and thereafter, this was a film that the Indian audience would relate to. But, it seems that the novel approach to Mahatma Gandhi’s massacre just did not work for the audience who are bathed in convention. However, the movie is definitely a classic.
Iruvar
MGR and Karunanidhi, the renowned actors turned politicians of Tamil Nadu are worshipped by the masses. No doubt, genius director Mani Ratnam felt that he had all things going in his favor when he conceptualized Iruvar, which is inspired by the lives of these stalwarts. With A.R. Rahman having composed the music and bigwigs like Mohan Lal, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Rai, Gouthami, Tabu, Revathi etc. playing important roles in the movie, everything was just perfect. However, the movie simply failed to make its mark with the audience who might not have been able to relate to the humane sides of their heroes. But, if truth be told Iruvar is a masterpiece which no film buff should miss.
Anbe Sivam
An adorable movie by Sundar C starring Kamal Hassan and R. Madhavan in lead roles, this was considered to be way ahead of times when it was released. Dealing with complex human relations and other issues like atheism, communism, capitalism and forgiveness, this movie got good reviews from the class audience but failed to wow the masses. Peppered with comical instances and philosophical anecdotes this movie is sure to imprint your mind with some great ideas.
Chennayil Oru Naal
A true story which depicts a green corridor in a busy city like Chennai to make it possible to deliver a heart to a dying patient in Vellore, this movie with its nail biting story and impressive cast seemed to have a sure shot formula for success. With stunning performances by Sarath Kumar, Prakash Raj, Radhika, Cheran, Prasanna etc there is nothing that could have gone wrong with the movie. However, it failed to enamor the audience.
These movies were made with a lot of passion and thought and are really a class apart. If you haven’t watched these yet, go ahead and give them a try. You surely won’t be disappointed.
