పురాణానికి వస్తే, ఒకప్పుడు ఉజ్జయిని ప్రాంతంలో ఉన్న కొండలమీద దూషణుడు అనే రాక్షసుడు నివసిస్తుండేవాడు. ఈ రాక్షసుడు ఇక్కడి ప్రజలను ఎప్పుడు హింసిస్తుండగా, ఒక శివభక్తుడు గొప్ప తపస్సు చేయగా అతడి భక్తికి మెచ్చిన శివుడు నేలను చీల్చుకొని వచ్చి ఆ రాక్షసుడిని భస్మం చేసాడు. ఇక ఆ భక్తుడి కోరిక మేరకు శివుడు ఇక్కడే లింగరూపంలో స్వయంభువుగా వెలిసాడు.
ఇక ఈ ఆలయ విషయానికి వస్తే, మహాకాళేశ్వరుని యొక్క ఆరాధనలో ఈ ఆలయంలో ఎన్నో ప్రత్యేకతలు ఉన్నవి. ఇక్కడ నిత్యం శ్మశానం నుంచి తెచ్చిన బూడిదతో స్వామికి భస్మ హారతి ఇస్తారు. ఇంకా ప్రతి రోజు ఉదయం నాలుగు గంటలకి ఇక్కడ జరిగే చితాభస్మాభిషేకం ఒక అపురూప దృశ్యం. నమక చమకాలతో ఈ భస్మాభిషేకం సుమారు 2 గంటల పాటు నిర్వహిస్తారు.
పూర్వం క్షిర సముద్రం చిలికినప్పుడు లభించిన అమృతబాండం కోసం దేవతలకు, రాక్షసులకు యుద్ధం జరిగినప్పుడు ఇంద్రుడు అమృత కుంభాన్ని పట్టుకొని పరుగెత్తుతూ హరిద్వార్, ప్రయాగ్, ఉజ్జయిని, నాసిక్ అనే నాలుగు చోట్ల దింపారు. ఆ సమయంలో అమృత బిందువులు గోదావరిలో పడ్డాయి. ఆ బిందువులను సేకరించడానికి కుంభమేళా ఉత్సవం ప్రారంభించారు. అందువలనే ఉజ్జయినిలోని సిప్రానదిలో స్నానం మోక్షాన్ని ప్రసాదిస్తుందని భక్తుల నమ్మకం.
ఇక శివుడికి అర్పించింది ఏది కూడా మనం తీసుకోకూడదు. కానీ జ్యోతిర్లింగాల విషయంలో ఇక్కడ శివలింగానికి పూజచేసిన బిల్వపత్రాలు తీసివేసి, శుభ్రం చేసి, మరల వాటితోనే మళ్ళీ పూజచేస్తారు. ఇక్కడే నాగచంద్రేశ్వరాలయం ఉంది. దీనిని కేవలం నాగపంచమి రోజున మాత్రమే తలుపులు తెరుస్తారు.
ఇలా ఎన్నో విశేషాలు ఉన్న ఈ ఆలయంలో రోజు శవ భస్మం తో జరిగే చితాభస్మాభిషేకం చుస్తే అకాల మృత్యు బాధలు ఉండవని చెబుతారు.
