A 17-year-old Muslim boy sustained a fracture and two of his fellow Madrasa students were injured after they were allegedly thrashed by a group of men for refusing to chant ‘Jai Mata Ki’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ at a park in Outer Delhi’s Begampur area. The men even broke an arm of 18-year-old Dilkash one of the three assaulted during the incident.
The men who beat up the boys have not been identified, however, a case in the matter has been registered and the police are looking into the matter.
The injured, Dilkash, Ajmal and Naeem, were discharged after treatment.
In his statement to the police, Dilkash “My friends and I had gone to Bans Wala park, some 300 metres from the madrasa, when we were attacked by a group of young men. They spotted us because we were wearing caps and asked us to say Jai Mata Ki.”
The boys claimed that they managed to save themselves and run back to the mosque, where they study in a madrasa. They then informed the police. The police are investigating the case.
The men have been drinking, according to a TOI report, when they saw the three students approach the park during the school break, and asked them to chant the slogan. When they refused, the men roughed them up.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikramjit Singh in a press statement said that a case was registered under sections 323 (causing hurt), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at Begumpur police station. He confirmed that the men complained that they were asked to hail ‘Bharat Mata’ — a slogan that has become the cynosure of controversies after a raging public debate on whether religions other than Hinduism allowed room for chanting it and if it infringes on the right of an Indian reluctant to endorse this form of demonstrative nationalism.
However, a PTI report quoted the police as saying that the victim did not mention any such thing in his statement on the day of the incident and that there were “inconsistencies” in his versions.

A major chunk of people who lost their houses, family members and livelihood shifted to different parts of India ( majorly in Hyderabad in the Barkas area to take refuge ). “We left our country for freedom. We were not allowed to practice our religion, pray at mosque or even educate our children. I am happy that I can practice my religion here in India without any fear of being killed.” Says Sultan Mohammed aged 60. He talks firmly and introduces his handicapped son and half of his family; others got killed in the massacre.
The refugees settled have been residing in the outskirts of the old city. They have five camps in Balapur. Two of these camps are rent free given by locals whereas other are paid slums in which people live in darn conditions. “We pay rupees thousand for a month for this shed, we do not have electricity and water only comes for 15 minutes. We only have two toilets” says Mohammed Noor who represents camp 2, where 45 families reside.
Most of the people who have language barriers are facing difficulty in finding jobs. The men do odd jobs like scrap collection, construction work and as a security personnel for their livelihood. Tufail Ahmed, who looks quiet younger than his age (35), says “Locals do not give us job; I work as a construction labour for about 15 days in a month. Sometimes they pay me less than other labourers or do not pay me at all. I have to accept all their terms and conditions if not how will I buy food for my children?”
Widows are in large numbers across the camps. Some of them have remarried in their own community to start a new life. They are strictly warned by the police not to marry the local people. They only have limited options in there ghetto or to lead a lonely devastated life. “My husband was chopped in Myanmar in front of my eyes. They also cut my daughter’s stomach. She cannot walk straight now and she has lost her voice after the incident. With lot of difficulty I have reached here and I am struggling to feed my three children.” Says Rani Begum with her broken Hindi, in her arms all her children play around. She cleans utensils and washes clothes in nearby houses to earn for her family.
The children in the camp go to nearby Government School. Most of the families send their children to school. They are adapting to the language spoken here. Sana Khatoon, 10 year old and study in 2nd standard has an innocent smile and determination for what she wants to become, ”I want to become a doctor and help all the diseased ones here.” Rafiq Mohammed who is handicapped by the riot faces physical inability to go out and work. He and his family depend on his younger brother who works as a construction wage earner. “At times when my brother doesn’t get work, we have to beg other people from the community for rice and Dal, which is the reason I have given my 4 years son to a local family in Sayedabad area who is taking care and sending my son to school.”
Hyderabad-based Confederation of Voluntary Organisations (COVA), an NGO at the forefront of Rohingya rehabilitation and many asylum seekers, have registered with them so far and many more are likely to come. COVA monitors the refugees in getting them UNHCR card. They also coordinate with the police to give them records about the refugees.The card comes in slots after the interview has taken place and it has validity of two years. “We are interviewed at the UNHCR office for the refugee card, they ask us various question about our country to check if we actually belong from there.” Said Mohammed Rafiq.

The country’s millions of observant Hindu widows are typically barred from all religious festivities because their very presence is considered inauspicious. But images show beaming women in saris showered in rainbow-colored petals and powder – joy etched on their faces.
The celebration at the Gopinath temple, 112 miles south-east of New Delhi, is a joy long denied. ‘I am so happy. I am playing Holi after 12 years. I am happy, very happy,’ said Samaddar, who appeared to be in her early 30s. The powder made her white sari and those of the widows around her shimmer in myriad colours.
So deep is the ostracization of widows that they’re often shunned by their families and forced to seek shelter in temples.
Aid group Sulabh International has been organizing regular Holi celebrations in Vrindavan since 2013.
The festival of Holi falls on Thursday this year, but in Vrindavan and many other parts of the country, the playing of colours begins a week ahead.
As loud music blasted, the younger women jostled with each other as they played with the colours.
‘Their participation in Holi symbolises a break from tradition, which forbids a widow from wearing a coloured sari, among many other things,’ said Bindeshwar Pathak, the head of Sulabh International.
Sulabh was asked to oversee the lives of widows of the city by India’s Supreme Court following news reports of the widows being forced to beg for food and into prostitution.

Shaktiman is a part of police mounted unit of Uttarakhand. She grabbed media attention suddenly when she got brutally assaulted allegedly by BJP’s lawmaker Ganesh Joshi and his men during a protest a few days ago. Not a new thing for BJP whose members grab headlines mostly for the wrong reasons. While politics started playing out on the back of innocent, poor Shaktiman, her hind leg had to be finally amputated to prevent gangrene spread all over which might have proven fatal to the animal.
Finally, after three days, amidst allegations and counter allegations, the accused BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi has been arrested, charged with cruelty and maiming an animal. The congress ruled Uttarakhand Chief Minister has assured all possible treatments for Shaktiman. The case also saw a huge outpour of public sympathy and hashtag #PrayForShakitman became twitter trend as soon as the news of her amputation surgery spread.
The Union Minister and Animal activist Menaka Gandhi has condemned this incident in strong words demanding the expulsion of accused Ganesh Joshi from the party. While the animal silently suffers, it certainly raises a few questions. In this age of modern technology, why are horses still used for mob controlling purposes? Such horses are already trained ones and will not harm anyone; still beating up animals brutally with lathi is appalling.
Now it’s the duty of the courts to establish the case and deliver justice accordingly, the case can serve better to the cause of animal rights. Using horses for such purposes is remnant of colonial era and we need to address this issue without any delay. According to The Indian Express report, penalty for animals beating, kicking over-drives and over-loads and such is merely Rs. 10-50. The proposal to increase the penalty for mistreatment of animals has been pending for several years now.
